השקט, המתח, ההוד, הקושי, ההתרוקנות והלידה מחדש הם הנושאים שאתם מתמודד אוהד שאלתיאל בסדרת העבודות יער.
בציורים גדולי ממדים של יערות שרופים חוזר שאלתיאל אל מחוזות ילדותו, אל יערות הקרן הקיימת בכרמל. כשהיה ילד, נפעם מן המראות, כיבה לא פעם שריפות שפרצו, משבוששו מכבי האש להגיע.
הבעירה לצייר שריפות פיעמה בשאלתיאל עוד לפני השריפה הגדולה שפרצה בכרמל לפני שנתיים, עת קרבה האש לבית הוריו בעין הוד. מושפע מספר השירים של רוברט פרוסט, בתום קטיף התפוחים בהוצאת קשב לשירה, ובמיוחד מהשיר מראה חולף, החל שאלתיאל לצייר יערות שרופים. אצל פרוסט מראה היערות השרופים הוא אנלוגיה לישימון נפשי ולריקנות האנושית. גם שאלתיאל מאניש את הנוף באין אנשים במרחב. אולם אצלו השריפה היא סימן להתחדשות ולהתבוננות טרגית–קומית ביערות הישראליים. יערות הקרן הקיימת הם למעשה חורשות שנשתלו על ידי בני אדם בניסיון להשתלט על הטבע בארץ של הרים קירחים במזרח התיכון. אותם בני אדם גם שורפים עצים ששרדו במזג האוויר המדברי ובעוני האדמה האופייניים. שאלתיאל מיטיב לתאר את העץ האחד, את האוד שניצל, את הענף שנותר, את העלה החצוף העומדים מול שממה שחורה כמו לועגים לרצונותיהם של בני האדם.
הפחם, הזפת, צבע השמן המונוכרומטי והלכות השקופות על גבי בדי ענק הם החומרים הטבעיים שמשתמש בהם שאלתיאל ומדייק בהם את תחושותיו: הנה הוא היער השרוף שתיכף יקרום עלווה, דשא, פטריות, חיות קטנות וחמצן.

Ohad Shaaltiel — Wood Burns

In large scale paintings of burnt woods Shaaltiel returns to his childhood locations in the Keren Kayemet forests of the Carmel, where as a child admiring the spectacle, he often extinguished fires when the firefighters were delayed.
The fervor to paint fires burnt in him even before the great Carmel fire two years ago, when the fire prowled at his parent’s home in Ein Hod. Influenced by Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice” book of poems, and especially by the “A Passing Glimpse” poem Shaaltiel began painting burned woods. Frost’s vision of burned forests is an analogy of the spiritual wilderness and human emptiness. Shaaltiel likewise anthropomorphizes the landscape by eliminating humans from the space. However, for him the fire is a symbol of renewal and a tragic-comic inspection of Israeli forests. As a matter of fact Keren Kayemet forests are groves planted by humans in an attempt to conquer nature in a land of barren mountains in the Middle East. The same people also burn the trees that survived the desert climate and poor soil. Shaaltiel excels at describing the lone tree, the shaded firebrand, the surviving branch and the defiant leaf facing the black wasteland, as if mocking human will.
The coal, tar, monochromatic oil color and transparent varnishes on gigantic canvasses are the natural materials Shaaltiel uses to sharpen his emotions: here is the burnt forest that will soon grow foliage, grass, mushrooms, small animals and oxygen.
